What This Year’s LARP Season Taught Me About Costume Design

As the LARP season winds down, the dust, mud, and triumphs of the past months settle into memory. For me, each commission isn’t just a project, it’s a partnership, a creative conversation between maker and wearer. This year has been no exception, and I’ve learned a few lessons that I’ll carry into the next season.

Function Always Wins

No matter how beautiful a piece is in the workshop, it must move, breathe, and endure in the field. This year’s hot sun proved that breathable linen and light colours can mean the difference between enjoying an event and enduring it.

Details Tell the Story

The smallest choices (the shade of thread, the curve of a neckline, a discreet embroidery) can anchor a character in the imagination of fellow players.

Looking Ahead

The off-season isn’t really an off-season for me. It’s when commissions start, research deepens, and my sewing room hums with possibility. Next year’s costumes will carry all these lessons forward and I can’t wait to see them on the field.

I’ve got lots of commission slots available over the winter. If you want a piece shaped by these lessons, send me a message to get your costume ready for the next LARP season.
